I have a couple of pieces coming soon that are marked “J.P.P.” in a rectangle box and “hand made” “sterling”.

Does anyone know who this is?
Is it a Chicago maker?

Sounds like John Pontus Petterson, indeed a Chicago A&C Silversmith. I'll dig out the particulars for you later.

Petterson was in business from roughly 1912 until 1949. The shop was called the Petterson Studios until about 1920, so I would guess that the mark you describe, if indeed it is Petterson's, dates from after 1920, perhaps quite late in his career. He worked almost entirely by hand, and produced some very fine silver.

Thanks Brent, I appreciate your response. I was hoping it was Petterson, I'll try to post some pictures when they arrive. From what I hear, Petterson silver is pretty good stuff. Is he listed in Darling's Chicago Silversmiths? I want to get a copy of that book. Thanks again,

Petterson is listed in Darling's book, but the mark you describe is not. The only marks illustrated are "THE PETTERSON STUDIO" and "TPS" in a sort of pie. The initials are correct, though, and we do know that Ptterson dropped the "Studio" after about 1920. So, I think it is a reasonable attribution, but still possibly incorrect. Please post some pictures of the mark, if possible; I'd like to see it.

Ok, here are some pictures...

Have you seen this pattern before? I think it looks like Allan Adler's stuff.

Thanks for the pictures. Almost certainly Petterson. Darling illustrates a place setting in another of Petterson's patterns called Neptune, and the shape of the blade on the butter spreader is identical to yours. Both patterns are very much in the Chicago / Scandinavian style. Porter Blanchard worked in both the "Chicago" style and the Boston /Early American style, and he did pass basic ideas along to his son-in-law Allan Adler. To me, though, Adler was more of a modernist, with his own distinctive style.

Petterson used several marks, including one that Sharon Darling (in Chicago Metalsmiths) says "incorporated a hammer and the initials PS within the emblem of the city of Chicago" c. 1915.

The hammer on the mark in her book is a bit hard to see. Here are two clear images:

These appear on a pretty Petterson spoon:

Here's a photo of a Petterson Neptune pattern ladle with the unusual mark:
