Arts and Crafts afficionados are familiar with the wonderful wrought copper lamps by Dirk Van Erp, a San Francisco craftsman of the early 20th century.

But I am trying to find out more information about his son, William, who produced modernist silver in the Van Erp shop from the 1930s well into the mid-century period.

My museum owns a great coffee set with ivory finials that we are having trouble dating. I can see it as 'thirties, and I can see it as 'fifties. But I can't find any substantive information on William Van Erp and his silver. Any clues?

There doesn't seem to be much written about William, and I can't add much to what you've already noted, I'm afraid. Here are a couple of things I do know:

1.) William's sister Agatha was also involved in the shop.

2.) They produced some flatware, but mostly holloware. I have seen flatware for sale, but just once in 15 years.

3.) If a piece is not marked sterling, it is probably heavy silverplate over copper. I think he may have preferred to work in copper, as there is no reason why he could not have used sterling for most pieces thast were made in plate.

Hope this helps a little!

Perhaps you could contact someone at the Oakland Museum. They may have some documentation on William. I will check with the literature I have and see if I can add further to the information.

I have done some repair work for a niece or granddaughter of Van Erps and will call her and get back to you.

Thanks, everyone. And I'll see if I can find an image and figure out how to post it.

There was a conference in November 2004 entitled Modernities: California Metals in Context" at Oakland. Dorothea Burstyn has written a review of this.
I quote: "A guest curator at "California Design 1910" Bonnie Mattison and Robert Judson Clark, professor emeritus of art and archeology, Princeton University, lectured on the work of The Van Erp Family. During the 1970s, many of the children of the original Arts and Craft designers were still alive and Mattison met them and conducted many interesting interviews."

Robert Judson Clark has authored "The arts and crafts movement in America, 1876-1916" Princeton University Press [1972] while Bonnie Mattison contributed the article "The Spirit of California Design 1910: Metalwork" to the American Art Review November-December 1974 (V olume I, Number 6).
Both might be interesting to try and contact.
