Am looking for information on Alfred Sciarrotta a 20th century silversmith from Newport, RI.

I have located a lovely piece marked Gumps, Sciarrotta. Contacted Gumps but they did not have any info on this artist.

Thanks for your help.

Most often we see Sciarrotta pieces in the "leaf" motif. This particular piece has three balled feet, measures 8.25" x 4" x 2" and weights 3.8 troy ozs. and is marked Black, Starr & Gorham Hand Made by Sciarrotta.

Italian born, Sciarrotta (1907 - 1985) was smuggled out of Italy in 1944 by U.S Army Intelligence to work on submarine armaments. After the war he opened Sciarrotta Silversmiths in Newport where his work was noted by Gorham, Shreve Crump & Low and Bailey, Banks & Biddle, the three firms soon began commissioning special orders from. By the time of his retirement in 1975, several of Sciarrotta's works were in the collection of the Smithsonian Institution in Washington................................
The above was gleaned from his obit in a RI newspaper. I've seen some very nice and purely modern work by him in copper. In silver I have only seen leaf form items.

Alfredo Sciarrotta also made silver items in non-leaf forms, including ladles, boxes, compotes, candlesticks, pitchers, coffee sets, cups, bowls, trays, and vases. He also made hand painted tile top cigarette boxes and tables.
