I would appreciate any information on this smith who, as I understand it, worked in New York c 1830-1840.

While poking about in the archive, I came across this inquiry with no responses. Perhaps you may have already found the information. William H. Doll was listed in tax records as a clock and watchmaker in Harrisburg, PA 1820-35. His brother, Samuel, was listed as a clock and watchmakeer and silversmith 1825-31. Their father was Joseph Doll (1768-1818)who was listed as a clockmaker w.1797-1818, but who advertised as both a clockmakler and silversmith in 1798 and 1811. The "J.DOLL" mark, on spoons previously assigned to New York and/or Philadelphia workers undocumented as silvrssmiths, was reassigned to the Harrisburg maker by John R. Mcgrew in Silver Magazine for Sept-Oct 1994.

Spoons I am familiar with by Joseph are early downturned fiddles with English style "square" shoulders. I have seen no attribution for spoons of similar style marked "E&S DOLL" (caps in a rectangle) - the "S" may be Samuel, but who is "E"? Has anybody seen and/or attributed this mark?

According to the "Memoirs Of Colonel Sebastian Beauman And His Descendants" With Selections From His Correspondece, Edited by Mary C Doll Fairchild, 1900, Sophia Christina Beauman married Dr William Henry Doll (son of Dr George Jacob Leonard Doll D D of Kingston, NY) Sept 28, 1796. In 1850 William H Doll a teamster is living in Warwarsing next door to Bauman Doll a laborer who may be his brother Sebastian Beauman Doll. In 1860 and 1870 William is living in Syracuse and working as a mason and plasterer respectively.

This too is a stretch, but nothing like my last reply to this post which was completely off the mark. Joseph had a son who was born on 21 June 1800 in Harrisburg whose name is recorded as Immanuel. Just as a possibility, that may have been Emanuel as family members show him.

It may be possible that "E&S" are Emanuel and Samuel. Good guess.
