My neighbor's elderly mother passed away, and he is in the process of liquidating her home. The family has lived in Greenwich CT for the last 200 years. Amoung the belongings are pieces of the most fantastic pieces of coin silver I have ever seen. There is a set of 4 ornate wine goblets, 8 inches tall - decorated with large leaves and bunches of grapes, says J M Fettel on the bottom. An antique dealer offered 100 for the 4. I know they are worth more, but am unablen to find the name. Does anyone have any info they can share. The goblets can be traced back to about the 1850's.

thanks

The mark isn't J. N. Feytel, by any chance? Feytel sold coin silver in New Orleans, of all places, from 1851-1870, which would match your dating. If it is Feytel, then the goblets are far more valuable than average.

Whether Feytel or Fettel, the mark is almost certainly the retailer, not the actual maker. Goblets like those you describe were quite popular in the 1850's, and the big Eastern manufacturers made them in abundance. They were often left unmarked by the manufacturer, and often by the retailer as well.

I assume that you can tell the difference between coin silver and plate, as the early silverplating firms also produced these kinds of pieces. We do not give valuations in these forums, but if they are coin and are in good condition, they are worth quite a bit more than $100. It they are Feytel, not Fettel, the value may double or triple, due to the southern association. Regardless, if they are being valued for probate, your friend should retain the services of a professional silver appraiser. If they just want to sell them, consult a reputable auction house.

I hope this helps!
