Here is an unusual mark. It is found on a pair of rather plain fiddle teaspoons, engraved "Higbee". The only mark is this italicized "Daniel C. Sharp".

This mark differs from most retailer's stamps, but I have been unable to find a maker by this name. The mark resembles that of Philadelphia manufacturer James Watts, of horse-and chevron fame, who sometimes stamped pieces with his full name in this manner. The style of the spoons suggests a Philadelphia, or perhaps southern, origin. I obtained these in the Philadelphia area, which strengthens my belief that these spoons are from Philadelphia. If so, then who was this person? George Sharp was a famous Philadelphia manufacturer, but I can find no references to any relatives in the business.

Any ideas?

Here is another spoon with this mark. This style of engraving is very "Philadelphia", so I would wager that Sharp was either a Philadelphia manufacturer or retailer.

If you're still interested after all this time, there is a silversmith by the name of Daniel C Sharp in the 1870 U. S. Federal Census living in Clayton, Cumberland County, New Jersey. He was born in about 1837. In the 1850 Census, I also find a silversmith by the name of Mahlon Sharp who is living in Southwark, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. He was born in about 1828 and has a twelve year old brother named Daniel. Mahlon and Daniel were both born in New Jersey. Also in 1850, their father Samuel is a grocer. Not too much to go on, but this information may be useful somewhere along the way.
