I have always found pieces with over-stamped marks interesting and I lately found a pair of curious serving spoons. They are a full 9 3/4" with rather narrow elongated bowls (the scan has distorted that shown). They have a long molded spade drop and a pronounced 'hump' to the handle as it leaves the bowl. There is a vestige mid-rib on the back of the pointed oval handle that has a very Dutch flavour -- it doesn't show well in the scan, but it is quite prominent and almost hooked in profile. The marks are the FEL of (I presume) FELLOWS over-stamped by J & A S for James and Abraham Simmons. The Simmons brothers worked together in New York City c 1812-1815 and are listed in directories as silversmiths and engravers. The Fellows mark is a toss -up; it could be James Fellows of Troy NY, working c 1810-1825 or Abraham Fellows working 1810-1850 in Troy, NYC, Albany, and Buffalo, both of whom used a similar mark. Or, for that matter, someone else entirely.

Which brings us back to the form of the spoons themselves. They would appear to date rather earlier than any of the mentioned makers. Were they made to match some old Dutch examples? Were they made here at all? James Fellows was known to be an importer of goods from Sheffield -- perhaps his trade also extended to Holland. How did they end up with the Simmons? Did they do the extravagant four letter monograms and add their stamp?

Opinions, anyone?

Ensko gives a date of 1805 for the Simmons brothers and 1809 for Abraham Fellows. If true, that knocks a few years off and makes it a little more plausible that your spoons were original to their time.

Just to round one of these fellows out just a bit more, Abraham Fellows that is, another of his sons that
was in the trade was Lewis A Fellows who appears in the 1880 U S Federal Census for
Brooklyn, New York and is listed as a jeweler. Lewis's son Edward P is also listed in
his household as a jeweler.

In 1860 Lewis listed as a merchant, and in 1870 he is listed as an importer of watches.
