As part of my ongoing silversmith tree, I have been looking into an interesting character, John Henry Whitlock. He was born in Crown Point, New York on 17 May 1837 and apprenticed to his uncle Lafayette Washington Preston c 1850. In addition to training as a jeweler and silversmith, he became a proficient telegraph operator. After working several years as a journeyman in Castleton, Vermont, he moved on to Eufaula, Alabama in 1860 to make his fortune and was just establishing his business when the Civil War broke out. He was forced, against his principles, to serve in the Confederate Army because of his skill with the telegraph. He survived and returned to Eufaula and married a local girl, Clara Griffith, whose beau was not as lucky and had perished. Whitlock apparently gave up silver work, beginning instead a workshop to make children's toys, supplemented by a general assortment of jewelry, imported (ie northern) silver, and fancy goods. It proved a successful combination and he became a leading citizen and public benefactor. He was remember as ". . . a man of unresting industry and enormous kindness for his adopted home." I have done a bit of digging in toy references (slim pickings in my neighborhood) to see if his work has been documented, but have found nothing but slim acknowledgement as yet. There is, suposedly, a portrait in the Museum of the South, but I have not had it confirmed. I know of no mark attributed to him, though he did advertise as a silversmith in Castleton in conjunction with Lafayette Preston before departing south. If anyone has any knowledge of his activities or works, I would be grateful to hear of it.

And by the bye, he is related to 213 silversmiths (a new record):

Judging by the census's (three out of four of them) New York may be the likely place for John Henry's birth afterall.

Also it appears that he worked as a jeweler in Houston County, Georgia around 1860.

In the 1920 U S Federal Census for Eufaula, Alabama seventy-six year old Alabama born Clara Whitlock was residing with her forty-five year old Alabama born son John B Whitlock who was an optician. A sixty-three year old Uncle George W Whitlock who was born in New York and was a jeweler also lived with them.
