The teaspoon shown is marked"HIRAM TARBOX",but I cannot find him in my references. The spoon appears to be Ca 1810-25. Note an indent in the fiddle handle between the M and T. Thank you in advance for your help.

Darling's New York State lists H & D TARBOX advertising in 1832 as watchmakers and jewelers of New York City. The directory for 1839 lists a Hiram Tarbox & Co, watchmaker. This spoon looks earlier than that, so may be from his younger days.

The New York Hiram Tarbox was born in West Greenwich, Rhode Island and was eighth in descent from John Tarbox, who setteled in Lynn, Massachusetts, between 1600 or 1610.  Hiram was also descended from Miles Standish through the intermarriage of the two families. Hiram was called Hiram Tarbox the 2nd until his uncle who he was named after died in 1878. Hiram the 2nd learned the jewelry trade from his uncle in Lisbon, Connecticut . The early mark could possibly be the uncle's.

Hiram Tarbox (the 2nd) had quite a few accomplishments to his credit during his lifetime . Among them was an 1856 patent, 15350, for a cattle stall. Hiram had bought a country estate for he and his family and lived out his days there. The stall must have been something he devised to work with his own livestock.
