Here is a spoon with an unusual mark and form. Although otherwise rather nondescript, the spoon has shoulders of a style I have not seen before. Does anyone have other examples with shoulders shaped like this?

As for the mark, there are a number of listed silversmiths named Davison, namely in New York and Virginia. I can't find this mark in any of my books, though, and I don't have the good reference books for New York and Virginia. Any ideas?

Thanks!

Brent

This mark matches a photograph of one in Darling's New York State Silversmiths attributed to Peter I Davison (1795-1873) of Shereburne, NY. Very interesting shoulders.

The mark found in the Darling book only shows the bottom half of Davison's mark. I would assume that it is not a common one and that the partial mark was the best that could be found..... until now! I too have never seen such shoulders before. Does anyone have any insight as to why shoulders on spoons became popular? Do they serve a purpose or are they only decorative?

This may be documented elsewhere, but Peter I Davison's son Charles E Davison who was born in about 1834 in New York was a jeweler in Sherburne, New York along with his father and on his own after his father's retirement sometime before 1870.

I have and/or have seen several examples with this mark here in Central New York, all spoons, none others with that form of shoulders (or fins as some call 'em to differentiate from the other end of the handle).

Best bet for getting Darling is to photocopy a library copy, as they're out of print and rather hard to find. As I've noted elsewhere before, there was at least one addendum mailed to subscribers later with additions and corrections, which you can also copy and cut up and paste in....

I did a page up of the corrections a while ago:
