I ran across a handsome serving spoon offered on ebay. The maker is a William B. Candee.

Lewis Burton Candee is well known to silverphiles, but I find no William in any of my references. Interestingly, Lewis had a step-brother named William Beers Candee (1818-?); is this the same man? Is anyone familiar with the mark/maker?

According to Charles Candee Baldwin, MA's 1882 book "The Candee Genealogy," Lewis and William shared the same Father. William died on June 19, 1863; it is said he was shot.

The 1850 U S Federal Census for Woodbury, CT lists William as a manufacturer. In the same census, there is a Lewis B Candee who is a farmer.

In the 1860 census, there is a possible match for William in Ontario, Knox County, IL, and in the same census Lewis was still farming in Woodbury, CT. There was also a Harry Candee in Woodbury who was born in Connecticut in 1816 and was a silversmith
