One of the things I like best about the silversmith tree project is the web-like connections it has exposed among seemingly unrelated people. In this vein, one of the games I enjoy playing is What if?. To take a typical example, what if John Howland, fresh off the boat, the first of his line to journey to the Americas, had not met, wooed, and wed Elizabeth Tilley, herself a first-to-these-shores immigrant?

Aside from the smaller consideration of losing Franklin Delano Roosevelt, we would not enjoy the fruits of:

Zalmon Aspinwall -- 3rd Great Grand Son
Samuel Babcock -- 4th Great Grand Son
Samuel Babcock -- 5th Great Grand Son
Charles Bisbee -- 3rd Great Grand Nephew
Shubael Conant -- 4th Great Grand Son
James Easton -- 3rd Great Grand Nephew
Edward Eells -- 4th Great Grand Son
Zenas Fearing -- 3rd Great Grand Son
Jabez Gorham -- 4th Great Grand Son
John Gorham -- 5th Great Grand Son
John Gorham -- 4th Great Grand Son
Miles Gorham -- 3rd Great Grand Son
Miles Gorham -- 4th Great Grand Son
Richard Gorham -- 4th Great Grand Son
Freeman Hinckley -- 3rd Great Grand Son
Otis Howland -- 4th Great Grand Nephew
Jacob Hopper Mott -- 5th Great Grand Son
Jordan Mott -- 4th Great Grand Son
Jordon Mott -- 5th Great Grand Son
Jonathan Bassett Nichols -- 4th Great Grand Son
William V. Pardee -- 5th Great Grand Nephew
Josiah Penfield -- 5th Great Grand Son
Asa Ransom -- 4th Great Grand Son
Daniel Stanton -- 3rd Great Grand Son
Enoch Stanton -- 3rd Great Grand Son
Zebulon Stanton -- 3rd Great Grand Son
Nathan Storrs -- 3rd Great Grand Son
Shubael Storrs -- 4th Great Grand Son
William Thaxter -- 3rd Great Grand Son
Gorham Thurber -- 5th Great Grand Son
William Herbert Thurber -- 6th Great Grand Son
Nathan Tisdale -- 4th Great Grand Son
William Tisdale -- 3rd Great Grand Son
William Tisdale -- 5th Great Grand Son

And this always brings to mind the question of what these fellows knew of their own pasts.. Did John Gorham recognize the commonality he shared with Gorham Thurber when they formed GORHAM & THURBER in 1850, or did they just see it as a happy coincidence of first and last name?
