An interesting item has just sold on ebay (# 3228363982) that illustrates the overlapping appeal of an item to different segments of collecting: It is a 3 3/4" coin silver "tatting shuttle" posted by a collector of needlework tools, and presumably not of silver per se. while the marks are worn, it is evident that it is incorrectly attributed to a midcentury New York smith, Joseph T. Weaver, but is actually by a somewhat earlier silversmith, Emmor T. Weaver of Philadelphia. Of the 11 or so different names in the bidding list, I recoginze very few as regular bidders on coin silver items, and so the others must belong to the group of collectors of fabric-making implements. I cannot think of a more appropriately named maker of such an item.

Rare American Silver Tatting Shuttle
by Joseph Weaver * Circa 1848

This has got to be the rarest tatting shuttle I've ever had. I've never seen one this shape before and I image it was custom made. It's solid coin silver (tested) and both sides are stamped with the maker's mark - "I. Weaver". The marks are rubbed but I think they're for Joseph S. Weaver. He was part of a famous silversmithing family in Utica, New York and he worked from c1846-1849 (Kovels'). One side is also monogrammed with 3 scrolling initials (FAH). It's sturdy and in nice working condition with intact and touching points. It measures 3 3/4" long and has a nice old patina. There's been no attempt to polish it.

A very interesting piece -- I have seen a number of these in ivory, but this is the first in silver and marked to boot. I doubted the attribution as well, but not have an example of Emmor's, could not identify it. I only lately tied him into the tree through his mother's line, the Trego's of Chester (that's his middle name, by the way). Do you have any information on his career? I have nothing but his life dates. And a better shot of his mark, perhaps?

He is listed in directories as a silversmith and sword maker from 1808 - 1833. Offhand, I don't recall that I have any other information on him, but I haven't looked for him recently. The mark is from a pointed end birdback teaspoon with block letter initials and an eagle which is unworn but unfortunately of too low a relief to photograph. It is well made and neatly engraved, but otherwise unremarkable. The mark is E.T.Weaver - there is a period after the T, but it is obscured by tarnish and does not show up well..
