Hi Everyone !!!

I was in a Mom and Pop type of store today where they specialize in old glass.

I happened to pick up, what I thought was a silver-plated lid of some sort.

It is very ornate, about 6 inches long by 2 inches wide .. a long oval shape really.

I was surprised to find it marked as coin silver!

My question is .. Could I possibly go wrong "IF" this really is a coin silver lid?

There is no container to the lid so .. I guess that I would be purchasing it for the silver itself?

The cost was around 32 dollars.

Am I correct in assuming that there would be no collectible value in this because of it just being a lid to something?

I am not sure how to check to see if something Really is Coin silver but .. I would be willing to take the chance if You guys think a "Real" coin silver lid, to some long gone container Would be of real value!!

Thank You
Brenda (virginia belle)

You have essentially asked a question that no one can answer but yourself.

-- Are you are as rich as Midas? Buy it; a clunker will not bother your purse a whit.
-- Does it strike some chord, aesthetic or emotional, within you? Buy it; it will replenish your soul, cheap at any price.
-- Does it seem an intriguing mystery? Buy it and see what you can discover.
-- Does it seem like a steal, a real profit maker? Buy it and take your chances, but don't complain if it makes naught at all.

None of us can judge if it is of value to you. Only you can do that. As for value in general, I for one, without seeing it, judging the workmanship and design, wouldn't even venture an opinion or believe one given.

This is not meant to be harsh. You are simply confusing, as we all have, the value of a thing with its cost; they are wholly different things and you need to settle on which will guide you.

Thank You Wev!

I really haven't seen real coin silver before and I thought that it Must be a rarity, even with just the lid alone.

It has a really nice pilgrim scene engraving though 8- )

Contrary to the blather of some dealers, coin silver (especially when marked COIN, is not uncommon. Much has melted down in the Hunt rush and it may not show up in your local market too often, but it still exists in piles somewhere, awaiting discovery. I think it was the Hardings that bragged they had made over 100,000 coin spoons (mostly from recycled Colonial silver!) by 1860.

Personally, I think lids are fascinating. Buying this would give you the opportunity to carry it with you while trying to find whatever it would go on. This could take years and years. With the lid, you might never need to buy another piece of silver again, just carry the lid and show it.

It sounds fascinating. Is the ornateness the result of hand decoration? What kind of item would have a 2 by 6 inch lid? A very small tureen? Any other ideas?

Also, I have always found lids highly saleable, if we are allowed to say that. For no clear reason, the US market has far more things lacking a lid than lonely lids.

Lids are popular because they were so often lost or broken (depending on the medium in which they were produced). A pot without a lid is often hard to sell but a lid without a pot goes like wildfire.

If the lid is beautiful, it also does carry the mystery of what the pot looked like, although psycologically, we do tend to form an idea of what the lid looks like if we only have a pot! ;-D
