Well, I started a new topic, as the old title was too far off. What I thought was a Missouri fair premium has turned out to be a graduation cup from an undetermined Missouri veterinary school. The initials B.A.H.V.M.S. stand for "Bachelor of Animal Husbandry Veterinary Medical Sciences." Now the big question: Who was Billy Benight, and from what school would he have graduated in 1855, the date on the cup? Remember the cup is marked only "ST LOUIS COIN" and not by the silversmith or retailer. I'll appreciate anyone's ideas!

Here are a couple of web sites that discuss Veterinary Medical History. The University of Missouri at Columbia web page indicates that their school of Veterinary Medicine started in 1884. The MU archive web site indicates that 1872 was when Veterinary medicine was first offered at the University of Missouri at Columbia. They are counting from different dates for some unstated reason.

It would seem that the people that maintain these sites could help you locate the school and person you are looking for or at least point you in the right direction.

I don't quite understand how the 1855 is displayed on your cup. I have several pieces of Schoolfield of Columbia, MO with his mark together with the number 1855. One is on a julep cup engraved BCAMA. That I believe stands for Boone County Agricultural and Mechanical Association. Another one is marked HCAMA for Howard County. I have never been sure whether the 1855 was meant to be a year date, as I have never seen a Schoolfield piece with a number other than 1855.

Good luck in your search.

1855 is the date engraved on this cup along with the name and initials.

I found a reference to 1855 and Veterinary Medicine at Michigan State University:

quote:
Michigan State University (MSU) was founded in 1855 as the nation's first land-grant university. MSU’s campus is bordered by the city of East Lansing and traversed by the Red Cedar River. This park-like setting provides an ideal venue in which MSU’s 41,000 students enjoy various activities. The College of Veterinary Medicine (CVM) is a national leader in state-of-the-art technology and facilities and has one of the largest caseloads in the country. .... See PDF file (click here)

You might try contacting their campus historian. Try starting with Randall W. Scott scottr@msu.edu who edited a page about [b]Veterinary Medicine Historical Collection[b]
