From the October 1861 issue of The Commercial Press, a monthly newspaper from Pultneyville NY:

quote:
"B.G. Eaton, dealer in Silver Ware and Jewelry, visits this section once in two months. Persons in want of any thing in his line will find him a candid and straight-forward man. We have known him for years, and we speak understandingly."

That is all I have discovered of the man.

Could your first spoon possibly be JH Root? Fredyma's Directory of CT Silversmiths lists a JH Root as a retailer in Bristol, CT circa 1860.

If so, that would be Joel H. Root, born 1822 in Mayfield NY, but in Berlin by 1850, when he married Catherine Roberts. He is listed in the 1880 census as a manufacturer along with his two sons, Theodore and Charles, who were clockmakers. His was, apparently, a prosperous firm as the census also lists 2 servents and a helper in the household.

He was distantly (5th/6th cousin) to the more famous Root silversmiths of Pittsfield MA.

Its definatly J.M.ROOT the only other clue is the mark which is behive shape (rectangle with a rounded top)and a almost cartoonish profile inside. It has a bulbous nose, short forhead, straight hair marks and a ruffled shirt front. Ill post a picture when I can.
Thanks for trying

Benjamin G Eaton born about in 1819 in New York. In the 1860 U S Federal Census he is listed as a merchant in Mexico, New York; there is an 1865 IRS Tax assessment for B G Easton which shows him in Mexico, New York with the occupation peddler of jewelery; and he is listed in the 1870 U S Federal Census as a jeweler in Mexico, New York.

And then just to show how flexible he could be, in the 1880 U S Federal Census for Detroit, Michigan, he is listed as a suspender agent. He shows up lastly in the 1900 U S Federal Census for Detroit, Michigan living with his wife and with his eldest son's family where he appears to have lived out his days.

The Wessman spoon is Swedish, from the town of Goteborg (if the star over the G is actually a crown). The Swedish date codes do not use a J, but if it is I5 it dates from 1863.
