Here is a new nominee for the worst item on eBay (at least this week):

Now that the auction is over, I guess I can post the link to this item:

quote:
RARE OLD AMERICAN COIN SILVER TOBACCO SNUFF RAKE ON CHA
3768632801

Presented is a fine American coin silver snuff rake. This piece would have been part of a gentleman's smoking paraphernalia. It has a simply designed handle similar to a spoon, but at the base of the handle is a small rake. The tines are sharp enough for use when raking up snuff for use. The handle is attached to a silver chain that may have been a part of a watch chain or attached to another smoking related item at some point.

The rake is hallmarked on the back of the stem with M&R. It is not hallmarked for purity but we guarantee it to be American coin silver.

It was most likely made between 1815 to 1835. The rake is in good condition and there are no cracks, no breaks, no monograms, no monogram removals, no repairs, and no problems of any kind.

The rake is 3 1/2 inches long.

The rake and chain together are 6 1/4 inches long.

A very fun thread a couple of years ago was the one where we talked about a piece of hotel silver that someone had listed on eBay as "16th century Brazilian."
now I've really seen it all on eBay ....

Hey! I could use one of those. Perhaps that will be my next big seller. Mustache rakes made from old spoons. Any clients interested in converting your early American spoons into rakes. Spoons by rare Southern makers are recommended. I have seen a few early teaspoons converted into salt spoons. (probably due to wear). I have an English ship back spoon where the bowl was cut down to make it into a salt spoon. It was cheap and I had never seen a galleon decorated bowl.

I suspect this was converted during the 60's.

I have seen repaired spoons where the broken handle had been reattached with the back of the spoon (bearing the mark) uppermost, too, which is a dead giveaway. . . .

Snuff said!

At the risk of being sued, I will tell the story a conversion. About 20 years ago in connection with a major donation, I showed a curator of a major museum a Southern mustard ladle. I wish I had a photo. Imagine a Ky shaped mustard spoon a bit larger than normal, not curved enough, a bowl a bit too large and horizontally oval, and with the mark on the front instead of the back. Think for a minute, before reading further. Right, I hope, an arm of a broken pair of tongs. He didn't catch it. Now we will see if there is a rash of oddly shaped mustard spoons on the market soon. I am perfectly willing to admit to some of my most ridiculous mistakes. Will you?
