Not really a coin collector, but do like it and have several nice pieces. This one is the first one I ever bought, many years ago. Marked E.ROUSE. COIN. Would this be a maker or retailer?

It is difficult to say for sure if a name on a spoon is a retailer or a silversmith sometimes even when the name is known. In this case, the fact that it is an incised mark makes one belief it is a retailer, probably in N.Y. state.

There was an Edward Rouse in Augusta, Maine, working in 1860, and an Edward Rowse, also in Augusts, Maine, in 1875. If these are the same man, the first spelling is probably the correct one, given the mark on the spoon, which probably is closer to the 1860 date. No occupation is given, but his name has been found on silver, and I would agree that he was probably a retailer.

Edward Rouse, born 1817 in Augusta, married Charlotte Swan on 10 September 1839. She was the daughter of Benjamin and the sister of Moses Moody and Charles Frederick Swan, silversmiths all. Rouse is listed in the 1880 Augusta census as a jeweler. Their daughter Francis and her husband Tristram Horne, also a jeweler, were living at the same address.

Just a bit more about Edward Rowse. In the 1850 U S Federal Census he is listed as Edward Rowse Jr, a watchmaker. His wife Charlotte was born January 19, 1816. Edward advertised in the Daily Kennebec Journal throughout the 1870's and as late as 1887 and in city directories from at least the 1850's to as late as 1888. (A possibility for Edward's parents are Edward Rowse and Mercy Blake both of Bath who were married on 21 July 1814 and appear in the 1850 and 1860 U S Federal Census's in Augusta).
