Dear Friends,
I have two large soup spoons. Each bears two marks; one is "Geo. Howe & Co." and the other is "Pure Coin". I assume these spoons are American and made of coin silver, but I could not find anything about Geo. Howe & Co. Any information about this maker would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.
Russell

George C. Howe and Company was listed in the New York City directory for 1837-38 and 1841-42. The recorded mark (from Darling) is 'GEO. C. HOWE & CO.' but I'm confident this is the firm.

Howe was also listed in the NYC directories in other ways from 1827-1842:
1827-34, as Stebbins & Howe (with Edwin Stebbins)
1828-40, also listed on his own
1837-38, G. C. Howe & Co.
1839-40, as Howe & Guion (Guion is not further identified that I have seen)
1841-42, G. C. Howe & Co.

These firms seem to have been primarily retailers in a general line of jewelry, watches, silver and plated goods, and most of the marks I've seen have various manufacturers' marks along with Howe's. In this case, the PURE COIN mark denotes that they are coin silver.

Howe was probably a retail jeweler. Any other obscure little marks? Many spoon makers, or coin silver makers, didn't use any marks at all, depending on their retailers to market the goods.

There is a George L Howe who was born about 1829 in Massachusetts listed as a watchmaker in the 1850 U S Federal Census for Worcester, Massachusetts in the household of Simeon N Story.
(Jabeze A Bishop is also in the 1850 census with Simeon N Story).

George Howe & Co was listed in the Lynn, Massachusetts directories from 1873 to 1889 with watchmakers George Howe and James H Connor at 41 Pearl.

This is likely George Lafayette Howe, whose sister Eunice married Simeon Story in 1838.

Eunice and George were likely the children of Levi Howe and Lydia D Goddard.
