Just found a way to photograph silver without those reflection headachs. Go to your local art supply store and ask for Krylon Dulling Spray it cost around 10.50. It is water soluble so it is an easy clean up. Make certain the object does not have a wax coating or oily as the spray will bead up. If you try it let me know what you think. The Krylon item # is 41310. I even sprayed a mirror with it and it partially obscured my reflection. I do not know why I would want to do that as I am such a handsome hunk of manhood.

Perhaps that's why--remember what happened to Narcissus?

**chuckle** Why did I suddenly flashback to childhood memories of my older brothers telling their reflections how good-looking they were? (They're still vain!)

For some of us, vanity is our only consolation. . . sniff . . .

It sounds like a good product (especially for men).

In London photographers who did product stills for the silver trade would use sprayed on milk to dull reflections.

From one of our new members:

quote:
A couple of months ago I learned in the eBay jewelry discussion group an easy and inexpensive way to photograph jewelry. I found it works great for silver as well. Take a plastic gallon size milk jug, slice off the bottom and peel off the labels. Then take the images with your digital camera through the opening at the top. The jug filters the light evenly and the pictures come out great without shadows and reflections. I have found that natural light works best but other lighting works fine too. It only works for small items that will fit within the wall of the jug obviously. I took the idea one step further and took a second jug and cut a hole just big enough to hold the lens of my camera just about 2" from the bottom so I can get a photo of small hollowware pieces from the front or side. I am still trying to come up with a way to use the same technique for much larger items. Plastic totes don't seem to be thin enough. Also at an antique show in Charlotte, NC there was a guy selling the "Cube Lite", a very professionally set up...which is priced from $600 to $1800.

This is a method I have used, both for silver and for shooting flowers in the wild; it is handy and works quite well.

Here are two shots of a mark. The first with a hood made from a 5 gallon water jug and the second without. Both have been cropped, sized, and saved with the same settings.

The spoon was on a table in front of a window with moderately bright reflected light.

this is an interesting topic for me, for I recently tried to photograph the communion set I made for my church a few years ago, and the reflection from the challis nearly blots out the entire piece. I'll have to give the Krylon spray a try.
