From my research, he was the 1st cousin of the Erie silversmith, Thomas Merrill Austin. Does anyone have information on Augustine's career? IP: Logged
bascall Posts: 1629 Registered: Nov 99	posted 04-09-2007 05:13 PM In the 1850 U. S. Federal census there is an Augustine Austin that fits the gentleman referenced here who is listed as a "pedlar." In 1870 he is shown as a paper "pedler." Same state and year of birth as your gentleman, but living in Fairfield, PA in these two census's. His health (eye sight) or business in general could have failed. IP: Logged
bascall Posts: 1629 Registered: Nov 99	posted 09-04-2009 12:08 AM Although later than the History of Erie County...reference, here is a second source that cites Augustine Austin as a silversmith: Nelson's biographical dictionary and historical reference book of Erie County, Pennsylvania ...(1896), page 505. It is available online on the Internet Archive site. Also here are some corrections and maybe clarifications to my last post concerning Augustines locations and occupations in the census's from 1850 through 1870: 1850 Erie, Erie County, pedlar 1860 Fairview, Erie County,farmer 1870 Fairview, Erie County, paper pedlar IP: Logged
