I have a set of plain silver beakers with a maker's mark that is simply W Thomson stamped on the bottom of each. Someone in my family was told that they may be American Silver from 1800's New York. I would very much appreciate any informtion I can find on these.

What you have is one of the minor mysteries of coin silver identification. William Thomson worked in New York City c.1809-1845, and did good quality work that is not terribly uncommon. There are two different versions of his mark recorded, with W. Thomson in script. Kovels also shows a block-letter mark, but I don't know where they got that.

But there's also a William Thomson from Raleigh and Wilmington, North Carolina. This Thomson was born in Scotland in 1792 and died in Wilmington in 1855; he trained in London, worked in Wilmington 1833-34, in Raleigh 1836-40, then back to Wilmington. There have been efforts to determine if these were the same person, but the dates of birth and working in the different places make it seem unlikely. (this information based on the Cutten & Peacock book on North Carolina)

'Beakers' -- often referred to in the south as julep cups -- are probably more common from the south than the north, although northern silversmiths made them for the southern markets and they were also used in the north. So it's hard to say for sure; in this case, if they're family pieces, I'd suggest turning to family history: if you had family in North Carolina or New York in the mid-19th century that would sway the attribution one way or another.
