I just picked up a sugar shovel by D & G McElwain with an Eagle psuedo hall mark. I assume this is NY state, but can't find them listed anywhere. Does anyone know them? thanks IP: Logged |

McGrew shows over 25 pages of eagles, many from New York but also from many other cities. If you can post a picture it would be helpful. McGrew does not list anyone with the name McElwain, but the eagle may still be identified. IP: Logged |

David and George McElwain of Becket MA were jewelers in Boston c 1845. George left around 1850 for Chicago, were he joined with Lewis Nowlin as NOWLIN & McELWAIN, jewelers. IP: Logged |

Also there's a twenty-four year old George McElwain in the 1850 U S Federal Census for Pittsfield, Massachusetts who is listed along with Charles Taylor and Josiah Howard. All are jewelers. In the same census a twenty-one year old David McElwain is listed in Becket, Massachusetts with what appears to be his father, a sixty-eight year old David McElwain. Their occupation is given as "laborers." In the 1860 U S Federal Census for Becket, Massachusetts, David is listed as a jeweler. And in the same census for Chicago, not surprisingly, George is listed as a jeweler. In the 1870 U S Federal Census for Ottawa, Illinois, David is listed as a jeweler. IP: Logged |
