Does anyone know whose mark this might be. It is on a pair of tongs.

It looks to me like the mark may be only partially struck, and that the second letter could be a W. If so, one possibility is Lemuel Wells-New York City, c.1790. Does that date fit with the style of the tongs?

They are scissor type tongs. The mark is LV within a hatched cartouch. It appears to be crudely made as well as original as it is on one of the finger holds.

With a mark this crude, anything is possible -- LV is likely, but it could be IV, EV, or (inverted) AT. As for the W suggestion, it doesn't look double struck or chattered, and there is rarely a serif on the middle point of a W, but you can never tell.

I think we need to see a picture of the tongs to see if we can judge age and origin.
