I am a bit confused. I realize that the moderators make the rules so I guess they can break the rules. Carlaz website is a large commercial silver site. Most of us have politely told others that this forum is not to be used for commercial purposes . Along comes carlaz with an inquirey for commercal purposes and suddenly this person is welcomed into one of the caucus rooms with not so much as a 'this question is not appropriate'. Preferential treatment?

The decision to ask Carlaz to join my private caucus room was entirely mine and was made after it became apparent that her post was headed for a conflict, if continued. The Caucus rooms were designed for exactly this situation -- a place that can be "rented" for topics that are, or may move, outside the bounds of the Forum in general. The members of a room join by invitation only and with full understanding of the host's intent. I have started and continued similar discussions in the past for various reasons. There is no special treatment involved, just my personal curiosity.

Most of the "business" questions we receive are of an obvious and, frankly, boring nature. Some, however, show more promise, as this one did to my eye. If that proves true and something worthy evolves, we will, when there is no longer a conflict, edit/move the thread back to the public forums, where it can once again become an open thread. If it does not, then the original thread will remain closed.

If it is possible, I would like to chime in on the status of this posting. I try very hard to stay within the forum guidelines. Yes the company I work for is a large retailer of silver but I also have a genuine personal interests in silver. My original post was as vague as I thought I could be without crossing any lines (please note that I only included a time period and no other details). I felt it was on same lines as inquiring about book that may be available (instead I inquired on web sites). It is somewhat a double edged sword for me as there are a great number of things that I could contribute to the forums but do not do so due to the fact that their future is uncertain. I do not mean do offend anyone nor do I wish for special treatment either. These spoons intrigued me because of the time period and the location (I used to live in Charlestown Ma). Yes, their future is uncertain but it was my personal curiosity that got the ball rolling.

These responses are fine with me, but I am curious as to how wev knew the name of the silversmith before CarlaZ mentioned it.
I hope that after the spoons are sold we can all see the mark.

I would not have initiated this posting had I not looked at the profile for carlaz. Seeing that the url was a commercial site and was not promptly discontinued prompted my response. Had the url been a personal one then I most likely would have said nothing.

You've got a point about the profile.

We don't control what a member posts in their profile. When we become aware, we do our best to edit so there isn't a conflict.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention.

[note: There are 7 other members from the same company. Like Carla and many other dealer members they share our interests and do respect the SSF Guidelines. I just checked the 7 other profiles and none required editing.]

I'm psychic -- didn't you know?

Actually, Carlaz gave the timespan 1678-1715, which I presumed to be either life or working dates. I did a quick search of my database and Bassett fit the former.

The above explanations should be satisfactory, but for any new readers unfamiliar with Forum policies, a few clarifications may be in order. It has been the Forum's policy that an item of interest not intended for immediate sale by a member is acceptable, so long as no mention is made of the forum's participation when it is eventually put up for sale (so as not to encourage illicit use by opportunistic sellers). This has been restated on several occasions when such disputes have arisen with duplicitous new registrants trying to take advantage of the Forums.

I personally do not see the inclusion of a seller's occupation or affiliation in the profiles as unwise (I prefer to know up front who we are dealing with), as a dealer can also be a collector, and a collector may eventually sell an item, too. This one seems to be a clear case of misinterpretation of the guidelines by an otherwise active contributing member, and should be accepted as such. That said, and for future reference for the benefit of any new readers of this thread, a question in this context without a photograph should be no more acceptable than one with one (besides its being harder to answer accurately in some cases).

I also agree with WEV that if this turns out to be by this particular Francis Bassett (and not the later Albany silversmith of the same name), it indeed would be a significant find.
