This pair of tongs is about five and three eighths inches long. They are marked inside the bowl of each spoon end and have no monogram. Richard Ward is presumed to be the maker, but if anyone has any better information that would be very much appreciated.

I have never seem marks placed in that location before. Rather unusual. How wonderful to see the corn represented this way.

Marks in the bowl end are not common but every now and then a pair shows up. It shows up enough that I doubt it could be called rare( unless someone is selling a pair on that west coast auction site and then it seems as though almost everything is rare).

Nice tongs. This mark placement is uncommon, but not unprecedented.

Why is Richard Ward presumed to be the maker?

The Richard Ward presumption is strictly in the absence of proof to the contrary and mentioned only for the purpose of opening discussion in this posting. A challenge to this notion with supporting information would be most welcome. Belden's had nothing that came to my attention about this maker, but Kovels' had him in Boston circa 1819 with a line drawing of the mark. At this point, there is no definite attribution for the mark on these tongs that has come to light.

Thanks to Fredz, argentum1, and swarter for your comments.
