I just purchased a coin tablespoon and it has a mark that I cannot identify. The mark is worn, so it doesn't photograph well, but there's a maker's mark of "thos.A." in script lettering contained in a rectangle. There is also another figural mark that is so worn that I cannot figure out what it is-it appears to have an anchor-like bottom to it, but beyond that I cannot figure it out. The style of the spoon is consistent with late 1700's-early 1800's, and it was found in a lot with 2 other similarly styled spoons of different makers, but both from New England and both late 18th century. How do the letterforms compare to this? Thomas Arnold (1735-1828) of Newport RI IP: Logged |

They don't really match. The lettering is in cursive form, so the A is a rounded capital letter, and the first name is all in small letters. IP: Logged |

How about pictures of the spoon itself (both sides)? There may be something that will help narrow it down. IP: Logged |

Would you photograph the mark and post it irregardless of the quality. There are some members who seem to be able to read just about anything. Thanks. IP: Logged |
