I hate to post this without an image, but the owner of this piece of silver wasn't cooperative in providing a picture. Has anyone ever examined any silver serving pieces where the handle is attached to the bowl of a ladle with a terraced or stair-step overlap? I wish I could describe it more clearly than that. No rat tail, and not a simple spatula-like overlap, but a layered connect of some 3 or 4 steps. Odd sounding, but apparently by a regional American smith ca. 1790-1810 influenced by French & German smiths. If I can get an image later, I'll certainly pass it along, but perhaps this description will jog someone memory if they've encountered anything similar. Sorry again for the poor choice of words.

Fitzhugh!

A wonderful sketch! Could it be a strainer, whipper or beater of sorts? I use something like that to scoop eggs out of the hot water, assuming I am visualizing it correctly.
Try a search for vintage egg lifters and see if the wire ones match your description.

Maybe someone else will recognize it.

Maybe I've misunderstood, but I thought Fitzhugh was describing this as a solid piece, with the stepped discs producing the effect of a shallow staircase.

I think he is referring to a decorative stepped drop on the reverse of the spoon bowl. I have not seen one quite like it.

I have seen half circles, but not full ovals.

I see said the blind man! I was obviously visualizing something else & not understanding what you meant about step dropped and I am sorry. A friend pointed me in the right direction so I will continue searching for the right item.

Oh, if only I could draw in 3-D! HA, it does look like a whisk from that perspective! No, I attempted to depict the back of a ladle and the layered/terraced effect of the handle connected to the back of the bowl in this stair-stepped configuration. I think this is American, by a smith trained in both Germany & France. I keep thinking Vogler did something like this too, but I can't recall where I saw the piece I'm VAGUELY remembering.
