Here is a coffin spoon (5 3/8” long) has the mark of “S. Peck”. The spoon is a little unusual as it has bright cut work decoration and most of the coffin spoons I have seen have plainer ends.

I have never been able to locate S. Peck. The mark is rather interesting as there is a line under the P and E of Peck. Perhaps this was just the maker’s way of forming a distinctive mark.

Any idea as to who Peck was?

There was a Moses Peck, watchmaker who had a son Elijah Peck, who was also a watchmaker. Elijah had a son Samuel (1778-1849) but no info on Samuels occupation. He may have followed in his father and grandfathers trade. There is also a Timothy Peck Silversmith wc 1810. All of these Pecks were in Boston.

Thanks Tad,
Samuel is a possibility as he would have been in his early twenties when this spoon was made.
Most likely "S. Peck" was not in the trade for a long time otherwise there would be more items with this mark.

Samuel Peck is listed in WEV's site and I suspect it is the S. Peck of this spoon. WEV has 1769 as his birth date and if this spoon was made about 1800 he would have been in his early 30s.
