It seems that when Freeman Hoyt passed on in 1869 his twenty-two year old son Oliver F Hoyt continued in the business. However, Oliver only lived until about 1876.

Oliver's wife, Margaret Catherine Mood had good silversmith lineage: grand-daughter of John Mood, grand-niece of Peter Mood, Jr. and great grand-daughter Peter Mood.

The 1880 U S Federal Census for Sumter, South Carolina shows Oliver's widowed wife with two young children and a brother, C I "Hoyt." The Hoyt name for the brother did seem like it might not be correct.

By the way in the 1870 Census, Oliver's wife's name is given as Mary C, but she may have gone by Mary because Oliver's mother's name was Margarette.

That was my mistake -- her name was Mary Catherine, not Margaret.

The brother was Oliver's -- Clarence Isidore

I see. He was her brother in law. That thought did cross my mind. Thank you.

There was another jeweler brother -- Harrectus A. Hoyt, also in the 1880 census.

Forgot to mention that Oliver Freeman Hoyt died 22 Jun 1877, apparently of yellow fever.

I noticed Harry in the census's, and it looks like he took over care of his mother after Oliver passed away. She is with Harry at least until 1900.
