Trefid sends along this mystery trademark and query:

I have recently received a single-bladed folding fruit knife in a grapevine pattern with this (Left Most) mark on the blade. It is very reminiscent of Michael Gibney's mark--less so of the early Gale & partners marks, and that of Theo Evans. If it follows Gibney's convention, the mark has to be that of one person, whose initials are GP. In Von Khrum (Silversmiths of the City of New York) I found 2 possibilities--Geo. Paterson, 1835, silversmith; and Gideon Peck, Jr., 1849, silversmith. The rest of the "GP's" were jewelers or watchmakers. The date on the mark, 1844, is close enough, but I've never heard of either of these gentlemen.
Does anyone have an attribution? This is someone who is making die-struck knives the same year that Gibney is getting the first patent for a silver flatware pattern. Unless he died or left the industry, he must be fairly well known.
