I found this spoon recently in a collection of 18th and early 19th century coin spoons from the New England area. Does anyone recognize the mark-I cannot find it in any of my references. I have included a picture of the full spoon-the initial appears to be a later dated addition.

The photo is hard to read, so I'm not sure if this a useful suggestion. But take a look at examples of Samuel Vernon's mark, which is SV in a heart. They are often on the body of the piece (rather than on the underside) and therefore are often well rubbed.

I should have described the mark better in my original posting. The interior of the heart is all cross-hatched design; there's no lettering.

Samuel Vernon died in 1737 - this spoon was made around 1805-10. Although one could have been used as a pseudo-hallmark, cross-hatched punches were often used by sellers to obliterate another's mark, perhaps to avoid advertising the competition. Unless a match to this spoon turns up with a readable mark, it may be impossible to identify its maker.
