A friend of mine and I are trying to identify a Coin Silver mug of hers. The maker is Carrington Thomas & Co. Does anyone know the City/State of this company or any history of the maker? I cannot find it in either of Wyler's books or Manufacturers' Marks on American Coin Silver. Thank you.

Remember the old saying "A picture is worth a thousand words". Without a photo there are inherent difficulties when trying to answer questions. Your description of a shape or style may be different than my description. There may be more than one maker with the same intial/name. So, a photo will help everyone to try to help you. Enjoy SMP and your silver.

In this case the name is probably disctinctive enough. The firm is likely the Charleston, SC, partnership of William Carrington and Stephen Thomas. They joined forces in 1872, and the firm remained in business until the 1920s. They were primarily retailers, and seem to have handled a fair amount of holloware (no pun intended). For biographical sketch of Carrington see Burton & Ripley's South Carolina Silversmiths 1690-1860; little information seems available for Thomas.

As many have noted, Wyler's is not a good reference.

Thank you FWG. I thought the name in this case would suffice. I appreciate your help.

If they joined forces in 1872 then why is the piece coin? I thought the latest coin was 1870.

Coin silver can still be purchased and is still in use by some people. Check the precious metals sites and you will find quotes for sheets.
