Have now finished researching coin spoons passed down to me. However, have questions on additional marks of a couple of sets of teaspoons. I identified the makers but lost on the meanings of the additional marks.

1. Two identical teaspoons by Hart and Smith of Baltimore. These spoons came down from a great great aunt, Anna Lucinda Whiton (1836 Ashford, CT - 1915 Ashford, CT, md. 1866 Charles Chism).

5 5/8" long. Both monogrammed: "ALW". Elliptical-shape bowls, collared necks, rounded fiddle-shape handles with some arching and bent up tips. Monogram: "ALW". Mark: "H & S". Addition marks: anchor, star.

Some sources have said Hart and Smith were in business only for a few years around 1815; however, the shape and style of these spoons look to be c1830-1865.

My question, what do the anchor and star stand for? At first I thought they might by of the Baltimore Assay Office marks but after further reading and surfing the net, I don't think so.

2. Four identical teaspoons by Benjamin F. Vallet of Kingston, NY per Kovel, p. 378. Don't know when, where, or from whom my mother got them.

5 7/8" long. All monogrammed: "JR". Elliptical-shape bowls, collared necks, rounded fiddle-shape handle with arched backs and bent down tips. Back of bowl has a possible rat tail? Mark: "B.F.Vallet". Additions marks: punch with "D" or a rubbed "A" on its side (depending on viewing angle), passant lion facing right, and 8 sided shaped punch with a head possibly facing right (head of Washington?).

What do the additional marks stand for? Were they part of Vallet's marks, as Kovel doesn't give an example of his marks? Could they by pseudo marks?

TIA.

The first pair of spoons are not by HART & SMITH, but by HOTCHKISS & SCHREUDER (David Hotchkiss and Andrew B. Schreuder) of Syracuse NY, c 1845-1871. The mark shown was used in the 1865-1871 period.

Vallet worked in Kingston c 1835-1850.

The additional marks on both groups are typical NY state pseudo marks.

Thank you! Boy, I didn't research this mark deep enough. I stopped after seeing the "H & S" mark example illustrated under Hart & Smith in Kovel. I think I did see the "H & S" under Hotchkiss & Schreuder but they showed it in circles and diamonds. Ensko shows Hart & Smith with H & S in one cartouche, p. 187. NY certainly makes more sense as state of origin instead of MD for these spoons to have reached the backwaters of CT.

Thank you! Glad to have this cleared up. I had heard about pseudo marks but hadn't any experience with them.

Hmmm.let me see. I'm related to Anna Lucinda via her father, Chauncey WHITON ***and*** via her mother, Lucinda MOORE! Gee, her parents were 1st cousins. I have a direct MOORE line, direct WHITON line, BLISS line, and so forth and so on.

Welllllll, it looks like I come by this silver interest honestly! It is in the genes. Wev, you are a person after my own heart! I'm deep into genealogy also. Genealogy certainly compliments an interest in silver research. My interests are early New England. Via Anna Lucinda's WHITON roots, we are:

2C 4xR - WHITON
6C 2xR - STRONG (Have 2 STRONG direct lines)
6C 3xR - STRONG
7C 2xR - STEBBINS
6C 4xR - DUNHAM
6C 5xR - IBROOK
7C 4xR - RIPLEY

She qualifies as a gg aunt because she married one of my CHISM's gg uncles. She was a favorite aunt of my maternal grandmother - as well as a 2C2xR. I also have a WHITON c1750 CT maple highboy of Aunt Annas that came down to her from her g-grandfather on both her sides, Elijah WHITON, my 5th g-grandfather.

I believe I also have deep silver roots via my 2 direct HUNTINGTON lines. All those Norwich, CT and VT HUNTINGTONS silversmiths came from the immigrant HUNTINGTON brothers Christopher/Simon/Thomas/William. Not sure of the origins of the NC/southern HUNTINGTONS. Both of my HUNTINGTON lines converged into my ggg grandmother, Sophia HUNTINGTON who md. Elisha BYLES. One of their daughters, Abigail BYLES, married into the WHITONS, Stephen WHITON - my gg grandparents. I have a coin serving spoon of Abigail BYLES: Wm. Rogers Sugar Shell

Gee, with all the intermarriages of early New Englanders, I'm surprised we weren't all born with 5 legs, 1 eye and a brain the size of a pea. Hmmmmm at times I feel my brain is pea size.

Love to know what genealogy database/program you are using for the silver db. I'm using TMG and at this moment have 18,000+/- documented people. No telling how many and the complexity of yours. I'm very much involved in the USGenWeb projects hosting the town of Plymouth, MA, and the towns of Windham, Mansfield, Norwich and New London, CT.

Thank you very very much for your great messages!

Yep, you will definately need a new dispaly cabinet, if you put that collection together.

All the southern Huntingtons descend from Roswell, who was third cousin to your line of Philip and John.

I use Legacy, which I have beta-tested since its release. I have also used TMG; outstanding capability, dreadfully designed. My full file is around 190,000 individuals in 30,000 families. I'm not related to any of them.

Very interesting!

Have heard glowing reports about it, never tried it.

Agree.

and partially agree. I have used TMG for nearly 15 years - since the DOS versions days. For over a decade it was the "cream of the crop." Now some have caught up and surpassed it in design but not in capacity. I know I should experiment with others but am getting to the point of hating to learn new tricks.

Hmmmm.... a bag of mixed blessings.

The Bad: With the amount of early New England families involved in the craft in one way or another, 99% of those with early New England ancestry are probably related to one or more of these silver families. You have missed out on the possibility of having ancestry from God's country - New England! My husband (100% southern ancestry) agrees that New England is God's country saying, "God is the only one who would have it". <LOL> wink

The Good: You probably have missed out on that small early New England gene pool - you don't have 1 eye, 5 legs and a pea brain! smile

Thank you, for the info.

There is a book entitled "Huntington Silversmiths 1763-1885" by William Johnston Hogan who is also a descendant of the Huntington's. This book traces the Huntington's from Norwich,Connecticut to Wilmington,North Carolina and then on to Marion Alabama.

Thank you for this information! I'm located in the the mid-south now and have had several people down here with HUNTINGTON links ask me if they are connected to the early New England ones. This would be a good source to check out to see if they are of the CT brood.
