I like old letters in general and especially when they tie into my project. Sometimes I have to buy them blind, based on the addressee, but with no idea of the content or sender. I got lucky a few days ago when I saw one sent to a Mr. V. Skiff, Springfield Mass, who I supposed was the watchmaker, jeweler, and engraver Valentine W. Skiff. I was quite pleased when the item arrived and I read the text:

Burgy June 4 1850
Sir
I wish you to bring up two watches that I laid on the bench. Smith will tell you the ones. Tell Smith to send up to Winchell those spoons that are marked for him.

J. M. Skiff

I knew that Valentine had a brother named James Martin, but not that he was also a watchmaker and jeweler, working in nearby Williamsburg. Poking about in the records, I discovered that he had married Angelina Clarrisa Winchell whose father, Volney, was a jeweler in Chicopee and most probably the Winchell mentioned above. Two new names to the list and a nice family/business connection -- not bad for a two dollar gamble.

Especially remarkable that so much information can be gleaned from such a short letter!
