The above cake basket was retailed by Robert Rait of New York and was most likely made around 1840. The crest belongs to a Kennedy family – not The Kennedy family- but they are all probably related in the distant past.

Robert Rait brought from several silversmiths so it would be impossible to know who actually made the basket. Mr. Rait was pleased with the basket as he applied his mark four times on the reverse. It is one of the prettiest basket I have seen.

A very pleasing basket!

I want one of our members who collects basket-of-flowers patterned silver to do a Collector's Eye. And I want one of our members who enjoys arranging flowers to duplicate the patterns in fresh flowers.

I'm willing to wait until spring or summer, when things are blooming.

I was actually salivating over this piece! The basket of flowers design is superb. I'd have put my name on this a couple of times too!

The March-April 1989 issue of the Silver magazine had an extensive article on the Basket of Flowers design in American coin silver spoons. This review was limited to the designs used on spoons dating from the 1820s. I suspect that the Sheaf of Wheat and Basket of Flowers designs lasted until Gale invented his press for creating other designs –these of course were mostly machine made and hence easier to produce. I think these back issues are still available from the Silver magazine.

During this early period the Basket of Flowers design was use extensively on spoons and sugar tongs. I have never seen it used on a forks or knives, but would love to come across one. In the late 1800s the pattern was revived and used on all pieces, but of course those are not period pieces.

The basket on the cake plate is much larger than used on a spoon and that gave the silversmith greater opportunity to provide the beautiful detail. This cake basket was made well after the 1820s when the Basket of Flowers was popular on spoons, but a basket of flowers design is always popular. On silver I do recall seeing a spoon with a basket of flowers, not unlike that used by American smiths, dating from the mid-1700s.
Glad you all liked this basket and I am ready for spring flowers to bloom.

The basket is fantastic. One thing that caught my eye about it was the motto on the crest which I understand means "consider the end." An Argyllshire women who was a native gaelic speaker taught me the phrase "praise the end" in gaelic, and explained that it was a caution against getting excited about the beginning of any kind of undertaking and waiting to see how it turned out before saying too much. (I won't murder the actual three word gaelic phrase she taught me by trying to spell it out).
