Since a whacked out shoulder has suspended my gardening duties for a while and I haven't done an update of my little project in quite some time, it seemed a pleasant way to pass a blustery afternoon. Appropriate too, on this holiday weekend here in the states, when we can think about and thank so many of the craftsmen included, not just for their adroit artistry, but for their service to their country. There is that Revere fellow, of course, but he always gets the press. There is also James Appleton, who rose through the ranks to become a brigadier general in the War of 1812; the Childs brothers of Milledgeville GA, one of whom stayed to fight for the south and one who returned home to Massachusetts to fight for the north; and another pair of brothers, Enoch and Daniel Stanton, who fell together at the battle of Fort Griswold in 1781 -- "[they] asked for no quarter and no quarter was given. They fought like tigers and were shot to pieces." The list goes on: Eli Wingate, Samuel Parmelee, Epes Ellery, Houghton Perkins, Phineas Pratt, to say nothing of the many now unknown, whose trade is only a notation on an enlistment form or muster book -- silversmith, worker in gold, britannia man, chaser.

And I would add, as a small personal indulgence, Colonel Dorothy Tessen. She has nothing at all to do with the trade, but served for 40 years, saw action in three wars, earned a bronze star and a purple heart, and played a mean blues harmonica. The best great aunt a boy could ever have.

Here's to her then, and all the makers and all our readers who have given their measure of devotion to country.

I hope the shoulder wound mends quickly.
Here's hoping everyone will have a thoughtful Memorial Day. June & I spent the day visiting George Washington Revolutionary War sites in New Jersey.

A little bump for Veteran's Day and, to keep it to our purpose, I put a measure of Jack Daniel in my grandmother's silver thimble (she would be horrified as a Temperance Union Leader!) and gave Dot's Star and Heart a salute.
