Another spoon I bought yesterday came in a plastic bag labeled "Marguerite Hastier N.Y. N.Y. 1771 Widow of Isaac Hastier 1750-1770." I would love that to be true. How romantic--a female silversmith! But the spoon looks later than that to me. The mark is M pellet H in an oval. Who actually made it? Matthias Haverstick?

It's Haverstick's. Darling shows a mark for Marguerite, but it has not been otherwise documented. She was the daughter, not wife, of Jan, whose business she continued.

Thank you, wev.

Moral: Don't believe everything you read on a plastic bag.

Always good advice, but it's a nice spoon for all that and a nice clear strike of the mark. I'm going to use the image, with permission, as it is better than mine.

And it is not commonly encountered, either.

Please do use it--I would be honored.

I only a tiny bit disappointed that it's not Marguerite--as you say, it's a nice old spoon.

I went a little crazy this weekend at the Pier show buying all the nice old unloved spoons in dirty plastic bags that anyone offered me for lunch money. I wound up with some really sweet little spoons, including this one, the rat-tail on the other thread I started today, a little bright-cut coffin-end by Peter Field Jr, and--I discovered to my delight when I got home--my very first bird-back spoon, by David Hall.

And wev, can I just say how extremely informative, impressive, and useful your wonderful website is? Thank you again for it.

Look--bird back!

The marks:

The spoon itself:

Maybe this bird picture is clearer?

It's very worn, and very hard to photograph.

Ah shucks; my pleasure. And could you send me a good shot of the right hand Hall mark? I have one on the site, but it's a little rubbed and slightly blurry. Yours is better, but a little too small to use. You can get my email off my site main page -- but only if it's not a bother.
