I have a set of 6 spoons marked only with G.F.Foye & Co. I haven't been able to find this name.

Can any help me?
Thanks in advance.

Hi, and welcome to the Forums,

First off, what is your gut impression of the spoons? Do they look old or new? Do you think they are solid silver or silver plate? Is there any wear? Are there any other markings at all? Are they monogrammed? If so, what style is lettering? Can you describe the pattern, or post a picture?

What I am really getting at is, Foye was probably just the retailer of the spoons, not the manufacturer. As such, the answers to the questions above are more likely to help us identify the spoons correctly. We look forward to your response.

Thanks Brent,

The spoons seem to be solid silver, they seem thin and they look very old,no monogram. I guess you could say they have a violin shaped handle with the very end of the spoon looking like a tractor seat. The lettering looks stamped not raised.

I'll try to get a photo.

Thanks again.

On further review, I found that Foye is listed in Kovels' American Silversmiths book, working circa 1850, location unknown. That, plus the description you give, confirms my initial impression, that your spoons are American coin silver. They probably are rather late for coin silver and date from, say, 1840 to 1860. The pattern is called "fiddle" in the silver world, and it was the most common pattern for coin silver between 1820 and 1860.

I hope this answers your questions. Foye may still have been just the retailer of your spoons, but in the absence of other information we just can't say for certain. They are certainly coin silver, regardless.

Following up on an old thread again, there is a George F Foye in the 1870 U S Federal Census in Boston who was born in New Hampshire in about 1839 and whose occupation was manufacturer of jewelry. In 1860 George F was in Somersworth, N H working as a watchmaker and jeweler. Could he have something to do with G F Foye & Co?
