Hello All,

This ladle was in with some misc flatware I purchased at a flea market. It's a gorgeous ladle! Unmarked as to content, but it is signed and monogrammed.

I've tried searching everything I can think of to find the maker. No luck.

Considering the monogram, I was also trying to connect this to the duPont family. I guess I came up with this idea because I live in the heart of “duPont land”…about 15 min’s from Winterthur. That “DP” makes me think duPont. Too farfetched? If a piece of duPont silver were floating around, this would be a likely area.

I also wonder about the silver content of this ladle. Even though it’s not marked sterling, it does not have the look of a plated piece.

So, here’s what I hope to learn from all of you kind and endlessly knowledgeable experts.

  1. Does anybody know this maker?
  2. Does anybody recognize the monogram as duPont? Or, at least, think it might be a possibility? With that confirmed, I think it’s safe to assume a duPont would have purchased a sterling ladle.
  3. How old do you think the ladle might be?
  4. Any info at all would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks much!
Dee

There was a George Jack who established a well-known fancy goods store in Boalsburg PA c 1830-1860

Thanks wev.
Would I take that to mean that Geo Jack was not actually the maker of this piece?

Whichever Jack it may have been, he was the retailer, not the maker.

Unfortunately, it is unlikely that these initials could stand for duPont, as it was customary for owner's initials on silver to stand for the first and last names; in addition the d in duPont was a lower case letter, and not a capital.

As for the silver content, it is probably solid silver, but presumably not Sterling. Silver during this period was supposed to conform to the coin standard, or if made before the establishment of that standard, it would have varied, depending on the content of the silver from which it was made (which could have been coins or remelted silver).

Nice ladle, even if it wasn't from the duPonts table..

Does this pattern have a name? It certainly has a familiar look.

Your lovely ladle is a variation of the Olive pattern that was very popular the mid 1800’s. The pattern you have is not familiar to me.

Go to A Collector’s View and click on the Olive Standard (sp) 1850 and Tuscan 1850. You can also do a general search of the Olive pattern in the “American Silver before Sterling” for more information.

Put in a saved search of “olive pattern” in the coin silver section of the popular internet auction site and you will be surprised as to how popular it was. One of these days your design may pop up and if you are lucky the seller may know the pattern name.
