The mark above belongs to John H. Connor of New York. He is listed as active from 1833/34-1836/37 in Deborah Dependahl Waters book “Elegant Plate. The mark is on a waste bowl that is separated from the tea set that it most likely came with. Mr. Connor was not in business very long, but the two items I have seen of his were very high quality and typical of the period. This waste bowl has a very attractive milled band with a shell and leaf design.

The mark pictured is interesting as it has an additional mark that appears to be a loosely rolled ribbon next to five pointed star. This may have been a journeyman’s mark, but I don't remember seeing a journeyman’s mark that was so stylish.
I do not recall ever seeing this ribbon and star mark and wonder if anyone else has seen it. It could be a mark that Mr. Connor used from time to time and with his limited time in business just does not appear very often. Any thoughts?

It is actually a blackletter S. Here is the mark on a piece marked by Eoff & Connor during their very short partnership, c 1833-1835. I have not seen a confirmed attribution for the mark that I can remember. I have wondered if it wasn't for someone named Starr, using a rebus like John Coney

Thanks WEV - that is an interesting observation. I wish that whoever used this attractive mark had used it more often. On the other hand maybe its mystery adds to the appeal of the objects that it is on.
