The very expensive The Gorham Catalogs Index CD-ROM no longer works if you have upgraded your Java.

I expect, most everyone has upgraded Java because of the security issues with older versions of Java.

The programs "readme.txt":

To use the Gorham Catalogs Index CD-ROM you need to have a computer with a Web browser installed which supports Java and Javascript (e.g., Microsoft Internet Explorer, Netscape, etc.).

To start the application, open the file "index.htm" in your web browser.

For detailed help on using the index, as well as specific platform and browser version requirements, open "help.htm" in your browser.

If you have trouble using the CR-ROM, please e-mail "support@newbook.com" or call Newbook Production Inc. at (905) 602-9136.

I contacted the manufacturer, "support@newbook.com", of the Java based tech used in the CD set.

Hello,

Current Java security won't allow your applications on the The Gorham Catalogs Index CD-ROM to run is there a fix?

Thanks in advance.

Hi,

Sorry, there is no current fix for this issue. We're looking into a work-around with signed Java jars, and we'll let you know if it becomes available.

Regards,
Richard

Oracle's Java site suggests a fix but it doesn't seem to apply to locally run programs. I tried lots of things added to Java's exception list to make anything running from my local machine/drive work, but nothing worked. The Java console and error messages were not helpful.

Anyone found a workaround or solution?

Hi,

I don't have a specific time when it might be available, but if a solution if found we will send you an e-mail
with the information.

Regards,
Richard

I hope I am wrong, but I get the feeling this is not that high on their list. I suspect they haven't had enough complaints for it to get prompt attention.

I suggest everyone who has the problem let them know.

Hello,

Another user of the Gorham Catalogs has found a work-around to re-enable the indexes.

Attached is his PDF outlining the procedure and new signed Java jar files.

Regards,
Richard

  • It may not be pretty!
  • It may not continue to work as more Java security patches come out.
  • I can't tell you if this work around exposes you/your PC to additional security issues?
  • I appreciate that work around was made available so quickly.
Thank you Richard Steadman of newbook.com.
  • I would prefer a manufacturer supported solution.

  • Nevertheless, this user developed work around seems to work.

Hi,

Newbook created the "signed jars" I sent before.

Another note is that some of the configuration steps in the PDF may not be necessary. The main thing seems to be replacing the old jars with the new ones. But it's good to have them for reference just in case.

I don't have a specific time for any further updates, but if a simpler or better solution becomes available we will let you know.

Regards,
Richard
