I have been researching my family genealogy and lately I have been discovering the various branches of my family tree that immigrated to Massachusetts Bay Colony in the early 1600s including the Governor of the Colony. To my surprise and pleasure I discovered a branch where one of my 7th Great Grandfathers was Samuel Foster (1676 - 1702) and who was a silversmith in Boston around 1698. I tried doing a bit of research on Samuel Foster but did not find much. Not his mark and not any photos of his silver.

Does anyone know what his mark was, or where I might see an actual example of his work either in person or in a photo?

Congratulations on the discovery.

There is no known mark for Foster. He is mention once as a goldsmith in a 1698 deed when he sold his portion of his uncle's estate. Kane records a single unmarked spoon "...in a private collection 'supposedly' made by Foster."

To add a few more names to collect, here are the smiths in my study that you are both related to:

Thanks, Wev! I did not know there were so many smiths who were linked together, even though somewhat distantly.

Thanks, Swarter and Polly. I guess there was a genetic basis for my being interested in beautiful silver.

Too bad there are no certain pieces of silver known from Samuel Foster. I would not imagine there would be much of anything still surviving all of the years from the 1690s to today.

The normal attrition is high and when you add in his death at 25 years, it is not surprising.

On a different but related line, I was recently repairing some silver for a gentleman in New Jersey and a baby cup in the collection was engraved with "H.Carr" from three initials(which I don't now remember). My grandfather, Harry Carr, lived in New Jersey after moving from New York City so, I wondered if that could have been his baby cup. I figured the initials were his father's, his mother's or a grandparent's. My brother Rod looked up grandpa Carr's line in his geneology book and none of Harry's forebears, in this country, matched.
It was an interesting possibility while it lasted.
