![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Tongs, American coin silver, that look to me to be from the 18teens or so, with wide ends with a drop, a wriggle-work cartouche, and a feathered monogram: Marked DC: I can't find DC in Belden (unless it's Daniel Bloom Coen, but Belden says his marks include D.C. and D<pellet>C--she doesn't mention just plain DC). Not in WEV's wonderful family-list either. Anybody know who DC is? Or want to disagree about the age of these tongs? (Edited to correct "David" to "Daniel.") ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() We don't know. There is a finless fiddleback spoon (set of three) at Winterthur with this mark and a unique incuse eagle head (at least that is what it is presumed to be). It was given by Richard Tousey, who believed it to be a unrecorded mark by Coen. Aside from it and now yours, I have only seen it once before, many years ago, on a c 1800 salt spoon that I stupidly did not buy. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() WEV, if Coen was active from c 1787-1805, is this pair of tongs in the right period to be his? I was guessing the teens, but could it be around 1800-05 instead? Or do you think it's too late to be his? Here are a couple of images of the engraved bow (which has a bend in it), in case that helps. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() 1800-1805 would not be amiss. The engraving is not better or worse than pieces with his full mark. That said, I suspect the Toursey attribution is in mostly process of elimination -- D C is not a common set of initials and Coen does fit (barely) the time of the spoons -- rather than anything more substantial. There is also another, and quite different, unknown DC mark in the collection that I am rather sure is Coen's based on the cartouche, letter forms, and spirit (if you will) of the design compared to the full name mark. But who knows? I have seen too many 'it's-gotta-be's fall to be sure. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Another possible DC mark on a pair of sugar tongs from some time ago. This mark could be DG or DC as it is worn and somewhat flattened. I do like tongs and for some reason ladles. I have a friend in Natchez that also loves ladles and has been trying for years to find some way to display them. Does anyone display their tongs in a way other than laying them next to a tea pot? [This message has been edited by ahwt (edited 07-11-2016).] IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thank you, web & ahwt. My tongs live in a drawer, except when they're serving sugar, ice, olives, chocolates, sandwiches, etc. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Chadwickendcabinets.co.uk and look under the display/museum cases. I first saw these on Graham Hodges website and it is the best way I have ever seen to display tongs, If you have more than one or two ( I have about 300). I used the idea and built two of my own and love how my tongs are displayed now as opposed to in a drawer. This is the first cabinet I built before hanging on the wall with a few tongs in it. Looks very nice filled up. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks Roger for the great idea. I think I see a reflection on the front so there must be glass covering your collection. I will look into that. I could also see a print on the backboard of the box of something to do with silver tongs, tea or the like. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I will post a picture of the finished product and the tongs in it with a better photo with it hanging on the wall. I don't think I have any print on the backboard, maybe it's the labels? This was easy to do bought the display cases at a flea market, drilled the holes for the wood pegs and mounted them, stained the cabinet and there you go. Don't think I have more than about 45$ in each case. by the way, I'm not familiar with the DC mark but the dating for Coen seems appropriate for the style. I will have to peruse my American tongs and see if I have any with that mark. Don't remember right off. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Sorry theses are not my best photos but you get the idea of what the case looks like mounted on the wall full of tongs. [img] IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() You fashioned a great display case and with the number of tongs you have a back print or picture would not even be seen. Thanks for showing your collection. IP: Logged |
