![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Going through things, I came upon another unknown maker I had not followed up on. I poked around a bit today and can put this on the record. The pieces first: a bright cut coffin handle place spoon c 1810 The second, a pedestrian teaspoon with a NY outline shell drop, c 1825, that I do not a picture of at the moment, but marked There is also a sheaf of wheat teaspoon c 1820 at Winterthur with the same mark as the coffin. There are no Lockwards listed in Darling nor in von Khrum. I have only found one likely individual in the NYC area who would have been of appropriate age to have made the coffin piece -- James Lockward, b abt 1787 who married Abigail Townley. Their son John was born in NYC 3 Oct 1808. Unfortunately, I haven't found anything that might verify him as a smith. I found two other Lockwards listed in NYC directories: Samuel (1848, 1852, & 1857) and William (1857), both silversmiths. I also found Samuel in the 1860 NYC census, as well as his son Jabez, silversmith, both born in New Jersey, 1801 and 1839 respectively. It may be that Samuel and William were also sons of James and followed his trade, but that is just speculation. I wish I had more to add, but that is all for now. Has anyone else seen either of these marks? IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I JUST bought a serving spoon with the same mark as your first example this past weekend. I did find a spoon with the same mark on the NY Historical Society website attributing this mark to James Lockward, but no support for the identification. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Bascall glad you are back as I missed your insight and genealogical finds. The coffin end design must have been very popular as many examples can be found and a quick search of this forum reveals quite a few postings and comments. This example is particularly nice with the bright cut engraving. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Family bible records show that James Lockward married Abigail Fairchild in 1797. They had a son named Samuel who had a son named Jabez. They also had a son named John T who was born 3 October 1808. Family historians have parts of the family locating back and forth between New York and New Jersey. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Samuel W Lockward is listed in the 1850 US Federal Census for New York City as a jeweller. His surname is indexed as Lockwell which is understandable because the handwriting is difficult to read. IP: Logged |
