I did work on our taxes today, but for a break I went through an old box of silver ladles. These are the smallest ones I have and from the number available on the market I must assume that small ladles were just as popular in the early to mid 1800s as the larger soup or punch size ladles. The smallest ladle in this group is only 5 3/8” long while the largest is 8 7/8” long. These are all from the US with the possible exception of the Heinsohn in the second group of ladles. I assume that name is of northern European origin, but as it is only marked with the name it could have been made just about anywhere. If Heinsohn lived in the US the design must have been his own or something he was familiar with from his home country. The forked prong attachment is unusual and it is the only ladle that I have where the handle and bowl obviously started as separate pieces.

For a short time I kept the smallest one in a jelly bean bowl, but found it was too tempting to use so I put the jelly beans away.

Below is a second group of small ladles. We have used just about every ladle shown; mostly at parties where guests served themselves. My wife has good memories of the largest one as she brought it at a house sale in St. Louis where a silver dealer there gave it to her and told her she should buy it. That was long before either one of us knew anything about silver and this ladle became another piece that she decided to keep rather than resell.

Posting about silver while working on taxes? I know the feeling! That is an excellent group of ladles, and now I'm craving jelly beans.

I wonder whether the different sizes indicate different uses--for example, small for cream and larger for gravy, or something like that?

I have some coin silver ladles with fluted bowls and always wondered whether there was a purpose to the fluting or just decoration.

I surrendered to the call of the jelly beans and brought a box at a big box store. I found a different ladle to use; this one a small cowrie shell ladle that is seven inches long. The glass trees with baskets are just the right size to hold the whole box of jelly beans.

I think one tries to match up the ladle with the size of the portion that is appropriate.

With all but the largest of these ladles I think these ladles would be interchangeable.

Polly I think the fluted design is just an attractive decoration and in earlier ladles it seemed to be used more in larger ladles that could be used for punch.
