I was looking through some old silver today and found two servers that I had forgotten about. They are both fish servers; one by Harding from Boston and the other by Bailey and Co. from Philadelphia. The Harding one is a Olive variation and has a rustic depiction of fish strung up and hanging from a bow; perhaps awaiting their final cleaning. It notes a patent date of February 21, 1865.

The Bailey server has a completely different feeling with a lively fish almost swimming off the silver. Here the fish looks Chinese while the Harding fish look more like trout; however I am not a fisherman.

The engraver on the Harding server put in more than a trout. On closer inspection there seems to be a lobster claw, a flounder and maybe even an eel with its head hanging down. The engraving is more interesting than I originally thought.

I sometimes wish that engravers signed their work.

Here's my example of an engraved American one by Bigelow Bros.& Kennard. Not marked coin but I have no doubts that it is. I find these really charming for some reason, especially the nice engravings.

It's amazing what you can find in some of the engraving detail when you really look. Fun pieces.

This is one of my favorite fish sets. Several makers used this slice end for their patterns.
