Author | Topic: Jehu Williams or another Williams ? |
cbc58 Posts: 333 |
![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Have an 8.5" serving spoon with the mark J.Williams. Could this be Jehu Williams from VA (not Sr.) who was partnered with Victor? His mark is different (more stylized), but it has a period at the end of Williams as does this one. Or is this another Williams? Any info. is appreciated and I've checked my books and online but can't find a similar mark. Have a bunch of unidentified spoons... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() That looks to me like Mark F shown in the Virginia Silversmiths book by Catherine Hollan. There is period after the J and after the S. This is shown on page 814 of her book. Jehu certainly used a lot of different marks. Nice spoon. IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ahwt - thank you for the reply. I have Cutten's book on Virgina Silversmiths but not the one you have that shows this mark. Looks like I may have to put that book on my list now. Any idea if this would be pre or post Williams & Victor? Tks IP: Logged |

![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Jehu was with Victor from 1813 until Victor's death in 1845. Jehu was with his son by 1856 so your spoon may have been made sometime between 1845 and 1856. Catherine Hollan has a smaller version of her book entitled "Virginia and West Virginia Silversmith and related Artisans to 1900" and it is of the size that you could carry it with you. If you are really interested in Virginia Smith I think you would find both very helpful. Her large book weights over 8 pounds. IP: Logged |
