Digging through my shoeboxes I came across a spoon that carries the monogram "Voter". I wonder if anyone would know if this is for someone who has the first or last name Voter - or would it be more likely something to be given as a gift or to signify the passing of giving African Americans the right to vote. Or maybe it was made in the 1860's and then monogrammed in the 1920's when women were given the right to vote.

The spoon was made by Canfield, Bro. & Co. of
Baltimore, MD who worked during the period from 1845-1881 - and this spoon probably dates to around the 1860's.

The surname Voter may be the answer.
I get a little stick on paper tag when I vote, but I wish they would give out coin silver spoons instead.

I think you should use this spoon on Election Day.

ahwt - thank you for the link and info. I looked high and low for a family name of Voter but when I tried to search in google - all my results took me to voter registration websites.

That is a great website to know about and will come in handy for future research.

Frequently Occurring Surnames from the 2010 Census are shown at this website.
Click on file B and the name Voter does turn up.

cool find! i feel it is just a surname, but don't you love finding antique monograms, inscriptions, etc. that carry some new significance in modern times?

the last one i found was a brooch with the initials LOL in big block letters biggrin
