This cup is by Huntington and Laboyteaux, a partnership in Cincinnati, Ohio in the 1850s. It is a nice example of cup often used for mint juleps, but this post is more to highlight a book on Cincinnati silver by Amy Miller Dehan. This book came out some years ago and if you have any interest in silver, it would be of interest. Interesting essays concerning pre-civil war silver and post-civil war silver provide an interesting history of Cincinnati industry and their designers. IP: Logged |

WEV, the collector of American silver has been very fortunate in recent years to have your research together with authors like Catherine Holland and Amy Dehan to make their collecting in simple terms more rewarding. IP: Logged |

I have found the Cincinnati Silver book by Dehan incredibly useful for identifying silver that is only marked with the retailer's name. Cincinnati had many retail firms, for example, A & J Plaut that did not manufacture silver but obtained it from established manufacturers. I have a number of pieces that are simply marked A&J Plaut. Her source material for the book included historic Cincinnati directories dating back to 1819 . The book systematically investigates all the players in Cincinnati's silver history up to 1940.This book is the most comprehensive reference book in my library. IP: Logged |
